Artesano Homes designs, builds and restores interiors the pre-industrial way: lime plaster trowelled in three coats, joinery cut to the room, tile pressed and glazed one piece at a time.
01 — The walls
Our plasterers work in lime and marble dust, laid on in three coats and polished with a steel trowel until the wall holds light the way stone does. Lime breathes, buffers humidity, and ages into a patina paint can only imitate.
Each room is sampled on site — pigment mixed into the finish coat itself, so the colour is the wall, not a film on top of it.
02 — The wood
Doors, wardrobes, staircases, kitchens and window shutters are made in our own workshop from oak, chestnut and reclaimed pine — measured against your actual walls, which are never square, and fitted by the people who built them.
We join with dovetails, mortise-and-tenon and wedged through-joints, and finish in hard wax oil so the timber can be repaired rather than replaced.
03 — The tile
Kitchens, baths, stair risers and courtyard floors in tile made piece by piece: pressed from local clay, dipped in glazes we mix in small batches, and fired so no two are identical. Slight variation is the point — it is what makes a tiled wall read as alive.
For restorations we match historic azulejos closely enough that only the date scratched on the back gives the new ones away.
Restoration philosophy
An old house is a record. We stabilise original plaster instead of hacking it off, splice new oak into rotten sills rather than swapping whole frames, and re-lay original tiles wherever enough survive.
Where we must add, we add in the same materials and techniques — but we date it. New joinery carries a stamped year; replacement tiles are marked on the back. Future hands should never be lied to.
Everything we install can be opened, oiled, re-limed or re-glazed by the next craftsman without demolition. A building that can be maintained cheaply is the most sustainable building there is.
